More Trips by Streetcar and Bike = Less Pollution

Posted on Updated on

According to Clif Bar’s website:

  • 40% of all urban travel in the US is 2 miles or less
  • 90% of those trips are taken by car

Streetcars and Bicycles are a great choice for making those short trips.  Neither is well suited for a 40 mile round trip commute, but for the shorter trips that represent nearly half of urban travel in the country, they are a convenient and environmentally friendly choice.

Don’t forget walking – the most environmentally friendly and healthful choice of all.

Something not addressed in these numbers –
How many of the goals of those over 2 mile trips could have been achieved in under 2 miles ?
When I stopped driving I was amazed how much time and money I was wasting driving across town for goods and services I could have had in under 2 miles.
